Jeep Safaris, Dune Bashing, and Desert Adventures: Beyond the Camel Ride

A complete guide to horsepower adventures in Jaisalmer — open-top 4x4 safaris, quad biking, and paramotoring across the dunes.

12 July 2026·Explore Overnight Desert Camp Jaisalmer

While a camel safari is the classic, quiet way to watch the sunset over the Thar, many travelers look for something faster and more intense. The Thar Desert around Jaisalmer is a vast playground for adventure, and today there are several ways to cross the dunes that involve horsepower rather than animal power.

If you are planning your stay at Explore Overnight Desert Camp Jaisalmer and want to add some speed to your itinerary, here is what you need to know about the desert adventure options available.

Jeep Safari & Dune Bashing

A Jeep safari is the most popular alternative to a camel ride. Instead of a slow walk, you are in an open-top 4x4 vehicle driven by a local driver who knows how to navigate the steep ridges and shifting crests of the sand dunes.

What is Dune Bashing?

Dune bashing is essentially off-road driving on sand. Because sand dunes are constantly shifting and have steep drop-offs (slip faces), driving on them requires specific techniques — letting tire pressure down, maintaining momentum, and sliding down the sand face at controlled angles.

It feels like a natural roller coaster. The jeep climbs a steep sand ridge, pauses for a second at the crest with nothing but sky in the windshield, and then slides down the other side.

  • Duration: Usually 45 to 60 minutes.
  • Best Time: Early morning (right after sunrise) or late afternoon (leading up to sunset). The sand is cooler during these hours, which makes the ride more comfortable.
  • Pro-tip: Hold on tight to the metal roll bars, and wear sunglasses to keep flying sand out of your eyes.

Quad Biking (ATV Rides)

If you want to be behind the handlebars yourself, quad biking (or ATV riding) is the way to do it. You are given a four-wheeled all-terrain vehicle and a brief safety demonstration, and then you follow a guide out into the sand flats.

Most quad biking takes place on the harder-packed sand at the base of the dunes or in designated tracks, though some tours take you up onto the smaller dunes. It is easy to learn, even if you have never ridden a motorcycle.

  • Suitable for: Individuals and groups looking for active participation.
  • Safety: Helmets are provided and mandatory. Guides ride ahead to ensure you do not inadvertently drive off a steep dune crest.

Paramotoring & Parasailing

For those who want to see the Thar Desert from above, paramotoring is the ultimate adventure. A paramotor is a motorized paraglider where you sit in a wheeled trike with a pilot behind you.

The motor propels you up into the air, and you fly over the dunes at an altitude of a few hundred feet. The view of the ripples in the sand, the circular camp layouts, and the empty horizon stretching toward the border is unmatched.

  • Parasailing: A simpler version where you are harnessed to a parachute and towed behind a 4x4 jeep until you lift off the sand.
  • Weather-dependent: Both flying activities are highly sensitive to wind speeds. They only run during calm mornings or afternoons.

Combining Adventure with Your Stay

At Explore Overnight Desert Camp Jaisalmer, we believe the desert should be experienced at both paces.

You can start the afternoon with a fast-paced Jeep Safari across the high dunes, settle down on a secluded ridge for a quiet sunset, and then ride a Camel slowly back to camp as the twilight sets in.

We coordinate all adventure safaris and activities directly with trusted local operators in the Khuri region, ensuring you get experienced drivers and safe equipment without having to negotiate prices on the dunes. Simply let us know what you want to include when booking your stay on WhatsApp.
